#1835-To Johann Brismann

To the worthy man, Herr Johann Brismann, Doctor of Theology, the faithful servant of Christ, in the LOrd his very dear brother.
I wish you happiness, my dear Brismann, in your being brought back from Latvia to Prussia but what you desire about another being placed in your stead, even as the people of Riga (Rigaer)have pleaded for the same, and now Prince Albrecht requests the same. However, where are the people to send or who wants to? I see everywhere here and every where else there is a shortage of such people. It is time for the Princes and Cities in reference to the servants of the Word to say: Keep what you have so that others do not take your Pastor. (Rev.3,11). There are several cities who for two years have been without a preacher. Yet I will be about it in earnest and bring someone from his place and provide him for there as Christ gives the grace.
I recommend to you this new arrival (novum virum) in Prussia, the Doctor Basilius with his wife whom I believe is known to you. She was a nun and companion of my wife, and he was pharmacist of the painter Lucas (Cranach); you will hear everything from him.
May it be right well with you and pray for me.I am forced to write briefly because of the great number of projects chiefly since Pommer is away. On the 24th of August 1531.
Your Martin Luther.
NOTES:Upon the request of Markgraf Wilhellm, coadjutor of the Riga Archbishop Thomas
von Schoening, Brismann went to Latvia. He returned to Prussia in 1531.
Ave of Schoenfeld was the wife of Basilius. B. ran a pharmacy for Lucas Cranach who did many of the Reformation portraits.
